LAMAR COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE BELOW POSITION:


JOB TITLE: Paralegal/Legal Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Public Defender’s Office
REPORTS TO: Public Defender
SALARY:  $8.00 - $12.00 hourly  

SUMMARY: Responsible for overall functions of the office, including but not limited to, scheduling and confirming client appointments, perform new client intakes and acting as a liaison for additional appointments with the public defender.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following but may be assigned other related duties.
•Â Answers office phones, runs reports as required and directed. Demonstrates knowledge and skills to appropriately communicate and interact with the clients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs. 
•Â Attend all docket calls and court appearances, as well as, maintain physical client files and excel database of information.
•Â Will also need to be proficient in drafting and filing legal documents.
•Â Manage and organize public defender schedules.
•Â Assist the public defender in designing and implementing office policies, establish office standards and procedures and organize office operations.
•Â Maintain public defender organizational memberships and report CLE to appropriate associations.
•Â Must be highly organized, handle pressure well, and understand the importance of deadlines.
•Â Must have a keen understanding of contracts and legal documents, familiar with legal terms and definitions and conduct legal research.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
•Â Must be able to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
•Â Working knowledge of MS Office applications, Westlaw, OneDrive required.
•Â Communication skills- must be able to document and present research and related information to their supervising attorney.
•Â Computer skills- need to be familiar with using computers for legal research and litigation support. Will also use computer programs for organizing and maintaining important documents.
•Â Interpersonal skills-will spend time working with clients and other legal professionals and must be able to develop good relationships. Must make clients feel comfortable sharing personal information related to their cases.
•Â Organizational skills-maybe responsible for many cases at one time. Must adapt quickly to changing deadlines.
•Â Research skills-need good research and investigative skills to conduct legal research.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
•Â Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or certificate in paralegal studies is preferred, but not required. Bachelor’s degree in related field is also a plus. 
•Â Legal office experience preferred.
